about me
Ball Canning Kit Demo & Giveaway!

Yesterday I was invited to an “Introduction to Canning” Event by the people who create Ball jars.  I think we all know that I have a little love affair of my own with the beloved ball jar.  Exhibit A – the beautiful grain display on my kitchen shelves…

IMG_6525

Exhibit B, my latest pantry makeover – complete with several different sizes of these handy jars.

IMG_7193

But believe it or not, this event was not all about me and my love of organizing with Ball jars.  It was a chance for us to learn about and preview the Home Canning Discovery Kit – an affordable and easy way to take the first steps into the world of canning.

IMG_8199 (480x640)

They had a big beautiful display table set up ready to show us how to can!

IMG_8154 (640x475)

And I was lucky enough to get to attend the event with my friends!

IMG_7201640x416

The event was held at the swanky Mimosa Grill in Uptown Charlotte, and came with a complete lunch spread – score!

IMG_8156 (640x480)

I was surprised when the first course came out and we were each given both options – the tomato sliders and the shrimp salad.  I hated that the shrimp on my plate was going to go in the garbage can.  :(

IMG_8159 (640x466)

The fried green tomato slider was awesome.

IMG_8160 (640x480)

It had a delish relish on it (that was actually one of the recipes from the Ball canning book!) that tasted almost exactly like White Castle.  (And that was a good thing…)

IMG_8164 (640x480)

I have never done any canning before, and to be honest I’ve always found it pretty intimidating.  But our demonstrator, Chef Keith Snow from Harvest Eating, made it all seem very easy and simple. While we ate, Chef Snow gave us a canning demonstration.

IMG_8162 (473x640)

One of the main benefits to canning is that you can use fresh, local ingredients without any added preservatives or chemicals.

IMG_8198 (640x479)

The nice thing about using a kit like this is that all the recipes and procedures have been tested, so there is minimal risk of contamination if you follow the steps outlined in the book.  (Can you tell the contamination piece kind of scares me?)

IMG_8176 (640x480)

IMG_8167 (478x640)

When I saw the servers coming out with the second course, I grabbed a server to tell her I was a vegetarian – I didn’t want to see another chicken breast go to waste.

IMG_8173 (640x460)

Even though it was the busy lunch hour, the staff at Mimosa Grill hustled to get out a beautiful vegetarian plate.

IMG_8180 (640x480)

A spicy vegetable salad…

IMG_8177 (640x479)

Absolutely delicious mushroom risotto – YUM!

IMG_8178 (640x480)

And a tower of tomatoes and mozzarella.  So impressive!

IMG_8179 (480x640)

Any restaurant that makes an extra effort for vegetarians gets two thumbs up in my book!

IMG_8181 (640x472)

Kath in action…

IMG_8171 (640x472)

And as I gobbled up my vegetarian feast, the canning demo continued – salsa making!

IMG_8169 (640x478)

It really seemed like all of these steps were pretty simple and didn’t take much time.  The nice thing about using this kit, versus buying traditional canning supplies, is that you can make small batches of things.  Traditionally, canning supplies are made for making gallons and gallons of sauce or jam.  The Home Canning Kit is made for those of us who just need a few jars!

IMG_8172 (474x640)

As the demo ended, out came dessert!

IMG_8187 (640x480)

Love having two half-desserts, so that you get a whole dessert with so much variety!

IMG_8192 (640x479)

Yuuuuum.  It was hard for me to not eat all of this, but I kept reminding myself that it was only noon.  I’m not used to eating these big decadent lunches!

IMG_8193 (640x480)

Before we left, the sous chef from Mimosa Grill came out to talk to us for a few minutes.  I love seeing chefs – it reminds me of culinary school, and makes me feel like we are all kind of in a secret club.  :)

IMG_8195 (478x640)

I left the demonstration feeling confident that by following a few easy steps, I could can like the best of them.

The nice people at Jarden offered to give one of YOU lucky readers a Home Canning Discovery Kit!  Leave a comment on this post saying what you would like to make if you won the canning kit!

Entries accepted until tomorrow at midnight – winner picked Friday morning.  Good luck!

I’d love to try canning my own salsa and making jam with local fruit from my farm share!

I would love to can pesto, tomato sauce, salsa, or jam. These are all things I buy in jars and don’t make myself that often, so it would be cool to can my own fresh homemade stuff.

I would love to have this set. I am just starting my weight loss journey, and it would be sooo helpful. Thank you for a fun giveaway!

Oooh, my dad makes a great salsa and my grandma makes wonderful pickles. I’d be so excited to make those things myself!

I would love to make tomato sause, basil pesto or salsa. On another note, I copied your pantry and bought a bunch of ball jars to organize my pantry. It looks so much organized now. Thanks for the idea!

I would love to make salsa! I’ve got so many tomato plants about to bust wide open. I’m going to have to get creative.

[Reply]

Callie     at 8:50 am

Ever since I saw your pantry, I’ve been meaning to get the ball jars we used at my wedding (as candle holders and vases) from my mom so I can use them the same way! I would LOVE to make my own fresh salsa – we tend to go through a lot of it in my house! Thanks!

[Reply]

Chelsey     at 8:50 am

I would make a plethera of fruit jams!!! I am all about fresh fruit in season – if I could bottle those flavors up for the cold Chicago winters, my life would be so much better in January. I can envision my bowls of oatmeal already…. blueberry jam… blackberry jam…. strawberry jam… I am getting ahead of myself, but still.

[Reply]

Courtney     at 8:52 am

I would LOVE to make some homemade jams!!!

[Reply]

Anna     at 8:53 am

I’m obsessed with ball mason jars too! I use them for everything… drinking water and smoothies, flower vases, dry storage, you name it. I recently gained possession of my deceased grandmother’s canning jars and made 25 jars of strawberry jam with my mother. I don’t need to enter the giveaway because I already have canning supplies but just wanted to say how much I love them!

I’d love to do something that’s not fresh/easy to get in the winter…

like homemade pickles or summer corn chowder!

I would definitely be canning some fresh jam!

[Reply]

Laura     at 8:55 am

I’m currently making freezer jams but I’d like to expand to tomato sauces, salsas etc. This would be a great start to it.

[Reply]

Lori (Finding Radiance)     at 8:58 am

I have made jam before, but never anything preserved. I think I might try nice summer tomatoes so I could have those for sauce in the winter.

[Reply]

Jayna     at 8:58 am

Ohhh, my mom has a HUGE garden in her backyard with tons of tomato plants. We are going to be making boatloads of spaghetti sauce at the end of the summer, and are looking to get into canning (I make a mean sauce) to help store it, and also give as gifts in the winter months. I love the idea of making salsa too. . . how awesome to have fresh salsa in the middle of winter.

I might be investing in a few of those ball jars to help organize the pantry. I’ve been experimenting in more grains in the kitchen (love it) which leads to pantry filled with bags. . .

[Reply]

Lauren     at 8:59 am

Every year we have an abundance of rhubarb and I end up throwing most of it away (since it turns to rubber so quickly!) It would be wonderful to make some sort of preserve with rhubarb that could be used on all kinds of things or given away as gifts.

[Reply]

I just got into canning a few years ago and mostly just make jellies and apple butter, but I’m using my grandomother’s canning equipment from like 40 year ago! As you mentioned, most of her equipment and recipes make dozens of jars so I would LOVE to get this canning kit!! Also, while tomatoes are in season, I’d love to can some stewed tomatoes or salsa! (And once you get the hang of it, canning really is super easy :)

[Reply]

Michelle     at 9:17 am

I’ve been dying to try and make my own jam for a while now!!

[Reply]

Ann     at 9:20 am

Decisions, decisions!
I’ve been wanting to can…but, also afraid! This would be a perfect way to begin the canning process.
I think I might have to start with some pickled vegetables. Or salsa. …or soup. Yikes, this could be addictive!

[Reply]

Erin     at 9:23 am

Ooh! I’d make jam! I took a jam-making and canning class last fall, and it was absolutely awesome. Jars of local cherry jam? Yes, please!!!

I would love to can some homemade spaghetti sauce. My Italian co-worker gave me her family recipe (only after promising to be BFFs and invite her to all future major life events — weddings, baptisms, etc. haha)
It takes 2.5 hours to make, so I only make it for special occasions because I rarely have enough time. It would be awesome to have a jar just ready to open. :)

I would make blackberry jam first-I have bushes and bushes of them at my house!

Ball jars are so nice! I used them for bulk, much like in your own household and they work amazingly well! Plus, they are definitely more lovely to look at (and more eco friendly) than plastic bags and tupperware containers. I would definitely be making lots of fresh preserves and canning veggies/fruits if i won the kit. I love making stuff at home, it always tastes better!

I am still intrigued by these jars! Just wish I could find them here with out a lid that is in two pieces!

I was just talking with my husband that I could can, and I think it would be great for gifts. I would like to try canning my own apple butter – I haven’t found really any in the stores here and what I have found is a small jar for a high price.

[Reply]

This is such a funny post to me, only because I’ve been thinking about making pickles for some time now. That and tomato sauce. My freezer is jammed full already from summer fruits and I bought a 25 pound box of tomatoes so I’ve been wondering about making sauce and canning it.

I’ve been reading about canning, but it still seems so scary to me! I would love to be able to make jam and applesauce and tomato sauce with my farmers market goodies from this summer to save for winter. I try to by as few processed foods as possible, and being able to have my own homemade in the pantry would be heaven!

[Reply]

Erin     at 10:06 am

I’d can some summer salsa (made w/ ‘maters from my garden) to enjoy during the winter!

[Reply]

Jes     at 10:10 am

I would love to be able to can my great-grandma’s jam (need recipe first!) because getting 1 jar at a time from my grandma is not enough! I would also try salsa, applesauce (i LOVE applesause, but hate HFCS thats in it and this would be a great alternative!)
I also use Ball jars to decorate and display memories with…

[Reply]

Erica     at 10:10 am

My grandmother was a canner and I’ve always been fascinated by it, but too chicken to do it myself – fear of contamination, pressure cookers, yikes!

I would love to try some of my grandmothers canned peaches, or spicy green beans, pickles, apple sauce, and of course tomato sauce.

Not to mention having great homemade food on hand, I think it would be a great money-saver. Our budget is something we are alway trying to keep in check.

Finally, it’s great for gifts! I still say the gift of homemade marinara and stewed tomatoes from a friend was the best gift ever. And of course, bringing home Mamaw’s peaches and green beans brings back great memories.

[Reply]

Patricia     at 10:11 am

I agree that canning seems intimidating and that is why I haven’t tried it either. Would love to start with salsa and pesto. I have tons of other CSA goodies this summer that I’m sure I could use too!

[Reply]

Jessica     at 10:13 am

I never thought about salsa before, but that sounds good. Anyway, I would definitely make strawbery jam! My grandma used to make her own and they were always the best! I’ve also always wanted to try canning, but it seems so meticulous and like a lot of steps, so this kit would be an awesome way to get started.

I have my mom’s pressure cooker sitting at my house because I want to can beans, salsa and enchilada sauce. The pressure cooker intimidates me simply because I have 3 young children who are masters at distracting me! For fear of blowing up my kitchen, I haven’t used the pressure cooker. The Ball canning kit looks like it would fit PERFECTLY in my large stainless soup pot… I assume it’s water-bath canning, which means, no pressure and no blow-outs – and I’m not talking about diapers here. :) hee hee!

Store-bought jelly doesn’t even come close to the deliciousness of my mom’s jelly! She isn’t able to can anymore, and I never picked it up because I have no place for 50 jars of jelly sitting around in my apartment! :-)

2. To try to salvage some of our garden goodies for this winter

I love the idea of canning some freshly made salsa! However, I have a bunch of fruit trees in my back yard which drop massive quantities of fruit so it would probably make sense for me to can those so they don’t go to waste.

I’m going to take your pantry makeover and try to incorporate it into mine!! Love your blogs too!

What a great lunch!

[Reply]

Homemade strawberry jam or salsa! My grandma used to make the most delicious homemade jam, but I have always been too nervous to try it out myself. No time like the present though, right?

[Reply]

Nicole     at 12:42 pm

I’d make strawberry-rhubarb jam. And maybe a black raspberry one if I can still get my hands on some!

[Reply]

I would love to make jam and pesto!

[Reply]

Since I am a nut butter addict and eat ab&j sandwiches all the time, I would can a bunch of different jams, especially blueberry, since those seem to be coming out of my ears lately!

I would can Colorado peaches because they are favorite food ever and they’re only tasty & ripe for one month out of the year.

[Reply]

Melissa @ HerGreenLife     at 2:17 pm

The contamination thing makes me nervous, too, but it’s worth getting over. Last summer we canned homemade pasta sauce and pear preserves. I want to expand our canning this year. We planted a TON of tomatoes, so I hope to have enough to can tomatoes and say goodbye to BPA-laced cans at the store.

[Reply]

Miranda     at 2:29 pm

Applesauce! The contamination during canning is what has always turned me off, but with this kit, maybe I won’t be so afraid…

[Reply]

sheila I     at 2:32 pm

Tomatoes & tomato sauce. I love making my own healthy sauce for pasta, but canning it & having it handy would be great!

[Reply]

I just started canning last year, and I love it! Plus, I gave away lots of my canned goods for Christmas presents, and people are still raving!

[Reply]

I would do bread and butter pickles, or maybe jam. I’m tired of jams that taste like nothing!

[Reply]

Probably tomato sauce. I’m also scared of contamination though!

[Reply]

I saw one of these kits in the store the other day and stopped to look at it. Then a few days late a girl at work was talking about how her mom made homemade spaghetti sauce and canned it every year when she was growing up. I’ve been thinking about canning ever since. I would have to try my hand at canning spaghetti sauce, apple sauce/butter, and salsa!! YUM!!

I love to experiment and make all sorts of things for my family. But as of late it has become a very small family and often times things I make go bad before we are able to use them, despite the fact that we love them. I would use this canning kits to make all sorts of seasonal things like sauces and pestos and jams that before I have only wished I could make. My mother always talks about the jam she used to make with her mother using that berries they would go pick from the side of the house she lived in when she was little. Just last summer we discovered raspberries growing on the side of OUR house, and I’d love to be able to make fresh raspberry jam, or marinara sauce with the abundantly growing tomatoes from our garden. I would love this canning kit. :)

I would love to can tomato juice. My mom did it all the time and then in the winter we had a simple soup of “macaroni and tomato” using the canned juice. So tasty and gives me the warm fuzzies thinking about it. :)

My mom taught me to can this fall and we went crazy canning applesauce, pear jam, salsa, tomato sauce, etc. It was amazing, but I only do it with her because there is a TON of gear to buy. Super excited about this kit! Now I can can at home instead of trekking 600 miles to Seattle.

I would love to win the canning kit!! I have been thinking about canning for a while, especially since I planted a huge garden this year. My last name is Cherry plus I live near Traverse City Michigan, the Cherry Capital of the World, and I had been thinking it would be so cute to make Cherry themed canning gift baskets (for hostess gifts, Christmas gifts, etc.)including items like Cherry jam, Cherry syrup, Cherry pickles and of course Cherry tomato sauce.

[Reply]

Sara     at 7:38 pm

Honestly, I am not exactly sure what I would like to make if I won the contest. However, I just turned 19, am new to cooking, and would love to try canning out! If I had to choose, I might want to try and can a tomato sauce made from our freshly grown garden tomatoes!.

[Reply]

Lissa     at 8:26 pm

I grew up helping my mother with her canning….not by choice did I help…I hated all that sort of stuff… but now my mother is gone and I have been making preserves and jams..but not a lot of any one kind. I loved the things she pickled.. She pickled apples, peaches, pears, and figs and I want some of those things again…so I am ready to get down to business and make my own.
