For today’s lunch, I thought it would be interesting to take two of my favorite things in this world, and see how they worked together.
Fresh organic strawberries…
And perhaps the most treasured food of all – avocado.
Artfully arranged on absolutely delicious Whole Foods whole wheat smeared with a thin layer of red pepper hummus.
Two amazing and nutritious fruits that work so well on their own – but would they work as a combo?
Some things are simply better together.
By far one of the best sandwiches I have had in a very long time.
On the housing front, we got our security alarm installed yesterday, which involved a lot of alarm testing and horribly loud screeching noises (burglars take note). Since then Indy has been his usual active self…
Not seeming to mind one bit.

While Huey, being the more sensitive of the two, has been petrified ever since – shaking and hiding in closets and under tables, refusing to be part of the family.
I’m not sure what has him so spooked, but I thought if I could just convince him to stop burrowing he would realize that things aren’t quite so scary.

Even though today is actually Huey’s 7th birthday, sometimes he still needs his little brother to show him that everything is going to be okay.
Because just like strawberries and avocado, some things are just simply better together.
Happy Birthday, Huey!

I would have never dreamed to pair avocado and strawberries. I am definitely intrigued by the combo.

I love spinach salad with avocados and strawberries, but this sandwich idea is super intriguing. I am going to try it sometime. And Happy Birthday to Huey :)

Awww – what cuties. I agree that avocado is like treasured gold. I’m a bit obsessed. Love your combo idea with the strawberries. I had a salad today with green apple shreds and avocado and chickpeas. It worked really well together.

I never though of avocado and strawberries together on a sandwich but I’ve had them together on salads and they are awesome. Great idea!

Beautiful dogs! Happy Birthday to Huey! May you have some yummy treats to celebrate your day!

Happy birthday Huey!
Our dog Seamus is 6 years old and we just added a puppy to our family – Calvin. I hope one day our two boys are just as calm and sweet as yours! Puppies are adorable and funny and entertaining, but so much work!

Hahaahaha this one made me laugh out loud. Our dogs are anything but calm, although they are sweet. I guess I only capture their down time on the blog. :)

Your dogs pause long enough for a photo-op. That’s calm enough for me! ;)

Happy birthday to Huey! Your dogs are adorable.
My dog is terrified of loud noises. We actually make a point to take her over to our place (she lives at the boyfriend’s mom’s) whenever they do fire-alarm testing over there. She also hates the vacuum cleaner, and is afraid of loud overhead noises.
She got hit by a car when she was about six months old and got a pretty serious concussion so we think she’s afraid of anything that might indicate she’d get hit over the head…

Omg! So happy she survived her accident. Poor thing :(

Emily, how do you choose a good avacado and how do you know when it’s ripe? I bought 4 avacados over the weekend and tried to pick them do to squishiness but that didn’t work. I may never buy another avacado again, such a waste. Any tips ideas?

Booo I HATE when I buy something that is a waste. Typically I buy them all very firm so that I have (some) control over their ripening. I usually set a few to the side, and add one at a time to my banana bowl – the ethylene gas speeds up the ripening. I tend to think that they are better when they have a little give to them, but they aren’t quite soft yet – firmer than you would probably think. Any softer and they have to become guacamole!

I am 100% convinced that Huey and Indy are simply better together. Not so sure about strawberries and avocado, though! LOL
Love those boys. And tell Indy not to feel bad. My dog, Jack, would have needed therapy if we’d been testing alarms at our house. ;)

PS. Happy Birthday, Huey!!

That is definitely an “AWWWWW” moment! Too cute!
We had the same LOUD NOISES a couple of weeks ago. Not much fun… but it gets the job done!

Happy birthday Huey!
I never would’ve thought to put those two things together. That’s something I need to try out if you liked it so much!

Happy Birthday pup!

What a fun sandwich – I would have never thought to combine avocado, hummus, and strawberries! Sounds pretty good though

Wow I never thought of that combination before. Sounds amazing. I am going to have to try this asap.

Happy B-day Huey!
My dog isn’t usually bothered by loud noises, but a while ago I burned something and our hard-wired smoke detector went off and wouldn’t stop. She was shaking and needed to be held like a baby for a long time afterward.
I’m sure between the moving and noise, Huey just needs some family time and he’ll adjust fine.

Aw, such a cute post! I was also thinking of the Jack Johnson song while reading this…banana pancakes anyone?

What a strange combination! I would never think to add those two things together, and yet….it looks so delicious. Hmm…. ;)

Such a sweet post! I love it!

I love dried cranberries and avocado (and Laughing Cow light) on a sandwich, so that makes perfect sense! On the try list!

i <3 s-berry avo salads – yum!

That’s definitely a combo that I would never think of, but you’re the chef, so I trust you that it was good.
Happy B-day Huey.

I have to admit, those two ingredients would not have crossed my mind to put together. And when I began thinking about it, it didn’t sound very appetizing. But I do love the color combination and I may be willing to give it a try, given your glowing endorsement! Love trying new things.

Aw! Your dogs are so sweet!
I would have never thought to combine strawberries and avocado… Wish I could try it, but avocados don’t agree with me. :(
[Reply]
I love avocado! And I definitely never would have thought to pair it with strawberries. I simply can’t believe that this tasted good so I may have to try it out for myself.

wow – what an interesting sandwich combo!

Awe, your puppies are so cute!

I often pair strawberries and avocado in my salads, but I never thought to make a sandwich out of the two. Great idea!
[Reply]
that sandwich sounds intriguing! i’d love to try it.
[Reply]
Happy Birthday Mr. Huey! I am definitely intrigued by that sandwich! And I agree… avocado makes everything better!
[Reply]
I made this exact sandwich once but with a swiss laughing cow instead of hummus.. so so good!
Also, another yoga query- waiting with baited breath for your 30 days of yoga update!
Also, unrelated- I ordered a “No Meat Athlete” after seeing yours, and it just arrived- I’m so excited to run in it!

Happy birthday Huey!
I think dogs are very intuitive about things, so those alarms probably really threw him for a loop. Give him a few days and he’ll come back around.
[Reply]
Ohh, poor little Huey being spooked on his birthday. Your dogs are so gorgeous. I love it when you post about them!
[Reply]
Your dogs are so cute! And this post totally made me want some strawberries!
[Reply]
P.S. I love your dogs they look so sweet and fun!

I have never thought to do the strawberries/avocado combo before!!! What a novel idea. Your pups are too cute!
[Reply]
I am going to have to try that combo! Yum!
[Reply]
Isn’t it funny how different dog’s personalities can be? My puppies live with my parents, and Georgia is super social and outgoing and Nina (who is the bigger of the two and far more imposing looking) is terrified of everything :)
I’m glad the boys seem to be settling in!
[Reply]
Happy Birthday Huey!!! Such cute puppies!!! I must try the avocado strawberry combo, looks delish!
[Reply]
Awww, those dogs are JUST like avocado and strawberry (didn’t it used to be peanut butter and jelly? :-p). So freaking cute. Can’t wait to try the sandwich.
[Reply]
Happy birthday Huey! They are so cute. I know my dog would be reacting similarly and freaking out/shaking so I can understand. I think it’s the loud noises that freak them right out because their hearing is so much better than ours.
That sandwich looks delicious. I never would have thought to put those two together but they are also two of my favourite foods. Good idea!

I love how your puppers have taken over the couch :) My Abby girl when we moved into our house, decided that the twin bed in the guest bedroom was going to be hers :) It’s covered in her black hair. But how can you not love them, they are just so cute :) Happy Belated Birthday Huey!

This probably sounds stupid, but seriously, how do you make your avocados look so nice? Mine always look really messy, which is okay for my purposes, but jeez what if I wanted to share?

I slice them when they are still a little firm – if you wait for them to be too soft, they get brown and mushy. But usually when the outside still feels a little firm, they are actually just right inside. (And I actually get that question a lot – not stupid!) :)

I LOVE strawberries and avacado but have never thought about putting them together! I see lunch for tomorrow!!
