    A Look Back.

Weekends.

It feels good to be back home, but I am sad that Sarah had to head back to school.  So fun to be able to spend the week with her!  Upon my return, I discovered that spring has most definitely SPRUNG in Alexandria!

IMG_8518 (640x427)

Beautiful blooming flowers everywhere…

IMG_8519 (640x427)

With little bits of history tucked all over.  We spent the afternoon walking the dogs around in the sunshine.

IMG_8520 (427x640)

IMG_8521 (640x427)

Final destination: the bookstore.  I have had Nook envy ever since Casey bought one last fall.  Today he was nice enough to treat me to my very own!

IMG_8522 (640x427)

Saturday = no makeup.

IMG_8524 (640x427)

My first download – a book many of you were nice enough to recommend.  I found myself laughing out loud in Starbucks, frightening people who thought I was a makeup-less cackling maniac.

IMG_8525 (640x427)

Favorite Starbucks drink – Tazo calm tea.  Soothes the soul.

IMG_8526 (427x640)

New foods introduced this week!  Had the sudden feeling last night that an iced cold bowl of cereal sounded really really good.  So naturally I went out and bought four boxes.

IMG_8527 (640x426)

And ended up with an almond butter too, which I have literally bought only once in the past.  It just sounded good this time!

IMG_8529 (418x640)

Last but not least, real dairy milk – something I haven’t drank in probably over a year.  I’ve been feeling a little worried recently that I haven’t been able to get in the good vitamins and minerals that I usually get from my diet (which now consists of ginger snaps and bagels).  I decided to switch over to cow’s milk for a bit and get a little extra protein and calcium.  I was excited to find this local organic milk in fun thick glass bottles!

IMG_8530 (412x640)

Deeeeeeelicious!  Finished the day with an amazing win by the Butler Bulldogs.  Doesn’t get better than that!  Today I am off to enjoy an afternoon outside at Mt. Vernon with friends!  Happy Sunday!

My due date is this Tuesday and like you, I CRAVE cereal and cold milk. So maybe this craving will continue for you throughout the next few months?! I have at least two bowls a day. I think it is one craving that is just fine! Enjoy!

[Reply]

Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen)     at 10:22 am

I say totally go for those cravings! Who doesn’t love a big bowl of cold cereal on a lovely spring afternoon? Isn’t it funny, after going to culinary school and making up these incredible feasts that you end up craving something so basic when your body is working so hard? Besides, you are getting tons of B vitamins in there and I know your body needs that for yours and the baby’s blood. I recently let my B vitamins go down by not eating much cereal and I can’t have dairy. I hope you are feeling better and enjoy that weather today!

The yogi cereal is DISGUSTING! But I’ve tried all the others and love em’ :)
Have fun trying them out!

Hehe :) I’ve glanced at that book in Books-A-Million! It’s really cute :)
And I haven’t worn makeup all weekend! It feels sort of liberating :)

I’m glad you are able to eat a little more! My ex-boss used to get milk delivered from a local dairy farm, and it came in those huge glass bottles!

[Reply]

Alessandra     at 10:36 am

Homestead Creamery is the BEST. MILK. EVER. I don’t even like milk unless it’s theirs – try the chocolate sometime, it’s amazing!

[Reply]

Stacy @ Every Little Thing     at 10:38 am

mmm that milk looks amazing. I’ve definitely tried to cut back on dairy b/c I think I (and all Americans) eat too much, but every once in a while, I just love super cold organic cow’s milk!

[Reply]

Valerie @ Cupcakes & the City     at 10:41 am

Yay for no make-up on the weekends!

[Reply]

Ohh is that Nature’s Path blueberry cinnamon flax? That stuff is SO good! Sweet and crunchy and a bit like crack to me :D
You seem to be feeling a bit better? Or you just didn’t mention throwing up in this post :P Hope you’re ok!

[Reply]

Freya     at 11:07 am

Ha, I just googled what a nook was, and now i REALLY want one! You’re so lucky :D

[Reply]

Emily     at 11:16 am

I love the Nature’s Path Heritage flakes. I start almost every day with them.

[Reply]

I love that milk. We get it delivered every week from arganica and it is so good.

[Reply]

Erin @ WouldRatherWalkOrRun     at 11:39 am

Have you ever tried eating mushed up avocado on thickly slice toasted wheat bread? I was recovering from getting sick one time and found I love this combination – no spices or seasonings required. Avocado by itself on wheat bread somehow tastes like butter…but is still bland enough to not upset the stomach? At any rate, I hope you feel better soon!

[Reply]

Ashley     at 11:51 am

We have local milk like that here too…and it is SO GOOD!! A huge difference to what I used to drink as a kid. No makeup? Still gorgeous..can’t tell! Hope you have a lovely Sunday!

[Reply]

Cindy     at 11:51 am

We’ve had nook envy for a while too!

[Reply]

jen @ taste life     at 11:51 am

Gosh, I haven’t had dairy milk in years, but if I was going to drink it, that one looks like a good one!

I am not even pregnant, but if the book is that funny I have to read it! I have already read what to expect when you’re expecting…before I have been expecting. So it shouldn’t make me that crazy, right? ;)

[Reply]

Michaela     at 12:15 pm

I’m a no make-up everyday kind of girl.. it’s kind of wonderful! Nobody seems to think I’m crazy.. or they just aren’t telling me?

Also, I couldn’t help but notice the evidence of an already half-eaten jar of almond butter… I almost bought some yesterday but having never tried it I didn’t know if it would be as delicious as peanut butter.

Emily, you are so pretty with or without makeup!

Emily – I am a huge proponent of raw milk. The nutrition is superior to any other type of milk. And it’s real food. You should check out these links:

Cereal is the BEST sick food. Actually, its the best anytime food. I can see myself cravings massive amounts of cereal when I am pregnant. Not that it would be any different than my cereal consumption now though. ;) Glad you are enjoying this beautiful weekend.

[Reply]

Sara @ Baking and Wine     at 12:47 pm

I also switched to real whole milk when I found out I was pregnant. As an added bonus it actually tasted delicious- and I hated it before I was pregnant!

I will have to look up the book you just downloaded. Let us know how it is. Have a great Sunday!

Which cereal of those is your fave? I’ve seen them around, but I’ve never tried them!

I love those milk bottles. I’m not a milk drinker but my family always used them to store spare change when I was growing up. It was fun to watch it accumulate and then roll it all up and take it to the bank. One of my memories from childhood!

Your going to love The girlfriend’s guide to pregnancy. It was one of the best pregnancy books I read while pregnant- really easy to read and filled with great suggestions, material, information, etc.

[Reply]

Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better! I love that the cherry blossoms are starting to come out around here… so gorgeous! My favorite time of year.

[Reply]

Kelly     at 2:42 pm

Long time reader, first time commenting! :-) Just wanted to mention that I read the Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy, and while there were parts I definitely thought were funny, I ended up giving it away because I found she was too cynical at times, (btw – I LOVED being pregnant, and wasn’t one to complain about pregnancy side effects because I felt all of it was such an incredible journey – our bodies are AMAZING with what they can do – I am so excited that you are on this journey now!!) – and she was really, really negative when it came to her opinion about working out while pregnant, and I felt quite opposite to some of her opinions about being active. I guess I just might recommend that you read it with a grain of salt!

[Reply]

susan fine     at 3:01 pm

I’ve read the Girlfriend’s Guide and would also recommend that you get WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING (although do scale back what they say; they are quite strict about what needs to happen, and it can be overwhelming). I also liked, once we had the baby, WHAT TO EXPECT THE FIRST YEAR.

[Reply]

Fallon     at 3:06 pm

I love the Nature Path Flax Plus cereal! Super crunchy in milk and tastes great with added blueberries, banana and a drizzle of almond butter.

When I was preggo I really enjoyed the Jenny McCarthy (sp?) books. Funny and totally honest about what it’s really like :)

[Reply]

Lisa     at 6:01 pm

Too funny–the first book I downloaded on my Kindle was also pregnancy related–Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy. It was pretty funny! And I also went back to dairy milk from almond milk when I found out I was pregnant–it sounded delicious and I wanted to get more calcium into my diet.

[Reply]

Dude, I totally bought cows milk for the first time in forever today because almond milk was sounding disgusting to my pregnant tummy (and for some reason cows milk sounded good?). Pregnancy is so funny! :)

[Reply]

sallymae     at 6:22 pm

Just in case your tummy has a hard time with dairy…I recently learned that heating milk up (like in oatmeal, or quinoa pudding) and adding spices like cinnamon, cloves, or cardamom help to digest it!

Don’t stress about nutrition in early pregnancy! Seriously, your baby is taking what you’ve stored up. I lived on mac and cheese, toaster strudel, and wendy’s for my first 10 weeks (no nausea but nothing else sounded appealing!). I’m 31 weeks and I had the throw out all of my pre-pregnancy nutrition habits to make my stomach feel OK. It got easier around 15/17 weeks, however, I struggle to squeeze in veggies and force myself to do it most days. I still exercise but not as intense as I did. I walk on an incline on the treadmill most days since anything that causes jiggle seemed to hurt or make me cramp up. A lot of the prenatal yoga is lame and I never got into it. I really like and appreciate walking now.

Also, if you are prone to worry – don’t read “What to Expect..” and don’t read any birth forums (i.e. babycenter). OMG, they plant fears and make common ailments seem life threatening! I read the weekly emails but stopped after development — the parts about what I was experiencing this week was always horrible and fear inducing. Even now, the most common pain leads to pre-term labor.

I should say I have had the easiest pregnancy so far – very few complaints. I stressed out in the beginning but in hindsight it was all for nothing! I’m looking forward to hearing your progress!

Sana     at 7:40 pm

Great find on the local organic milk in a glass bottle. Reminds me of the days when I had the milk man deliver milk to our door. Yes, I lived in a small town and I’m not really that old (3 yrs older than you…), but we did have a milk man. :-)

[Reply]

Nicole     at 10:20 pm

That book is great! Not that i’ve been blessed to have a baby just yet…. I have bought that book as gifts for 2 of my friends when they first found out they were pregnant for the first time.
My (ex) boss told me about it and when she was pregnant with her first daughter she read “What to expect when expecting” and was convinced EVERYTHING she read was wrong with her lol. This book helped lighted things up and got her pass it. Hope you enjoy!

[Reply]

Katie KS     at 10:51 pm

Not sure if anyone has recommended gummy prenatals to you but I have used them this pregnancy and they are much better than chewable kids vitamins. I can’t take regular prenatals as big people vitamins make me sick regardless of pregnancy :) Just figured I’d add that as a suggestion to getting nutrients. They do not have iron in them, at least the ones I have. I have found them (of all places) at Walmart!

Also, I eat colby/jack cheese sticks every day. I think it’s some protein and dairy to help me feel a bit better. But, I am also on zofran and wear seabands. I have learned this pregnancy that acid is a big cause of puking, so cutting that back has helped. Maybe some of those acidic drinks (while they sound good to me too!) are causing you issues?

Hope you feel better soon and find foods you can handle! I do feel your pain and bet you are having a GIRL! :)

In reply to above comments… I wanted to mention that my friends who have been pregnant and/or are in the health care field are adamant that What To Expect When You’re Expecting contains a lot of scary misinformation. But I suspect you’re doing all the research you can, and I know you’re the type to be on top of things. So I’ll refrain from further advice.

After many months of no store-bought cereal (just homemade granola), I, too, caved and bought some cereal to munch on during the first trimester nausea fun.

I was right there with you on the nutrition worries, but realizing how tiny the baby was at that stage of development, and how little it really needed, helped me feel better :)

I’m totally into makeup-less days. Been foregoing eye makeup at work this week… saves me time and irritated eyes later on in the day.

I worry about milk during pregnancy (for me), because I can’t tolerate it. But then I worry that if I don’t drink any, my future kid won’t be able to tolerate lactose — not a fate I’d like to give him/her.
