On December 27th, 1979, Casey Edward Malone came into the world.
Growing up in Indiana, he had a thing for matching sweat suits, little league sports, and an impressive rat-tail that grew half-way down his back.
Across the state line in Ohio, Emily Bohlen Holcombe arrived a little over a year later on February 24th, 1981.
She was known for wearing jelly shoes, loving Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and loving dresses that sparkled.
Twenty-something years later – they met, fell madly in love, and got married.
Today, they are a happy family of four.
And now sometime around October 15th, 2011 – that family of four will become a family of five.
No, we’re not getting another dog (lord help us) – we’re having a BABY!
It is still very early (8 weeks!), and there is still a lot of unknown. Most people wait until later to make this announcement, but writing is my therapy and my outlet. Keeping it all to myself has been hard enough for the past four weeks, and I wanted to share the news with you guys as soon as we had told family. Either way, for better or for worse, we can all share in the journey together. I know that no matter what happens, writing about it is the best choice for me.

Emily, I love your blog and it is one of the few I read regularly. I am 15 weeks pregnant (with my first also!) and am so excited for you! Even though I don’t know you…hah. I am looking forward to reading about your experiences, especially with running! I am running still, just a lot slower and shorter than usual. Have you been able to keep running despite the nausea and total body exhaustion that comes with that first trimester? From my own experience…13 weeks was my magic week – no more nausea and my bedtime was finally past 8:30PM. :) congrats!

Congrats! And I just have to say that I am SO proud of you for going public so early. I have suffered 2 miscarriages in my past & I, like you, was quite public about them. Some people embraced it, some people ran from it. I think it’s ridiculous that our culture makes the subject of miscarriage so taboo. Women going through it need support & love. Not to feel like they need to go at it alone. SO… I am believing for a happy & healthy pregnancy & baby for you!!! It’s such an exciting time! P.S. Congratuations to both of you! Being a mom is the most fulfilling and most frustrating work/gift you will ever do and have. I am a happy mom of an almost 10 year old boy who was born at 29 weeks and 5 days. He was 2 pounds 4 ounces, and a perfect little fighter who pulled through and is now the light of my life (who I frequently wish to gag as he never stops talking….LOL). Very little in life is as exciting as growing a new life…. I wish you both an untroubled and amazing journey!

I admire you Jessica! I had a miscarriage so early we hadn’t told anyone we were pregnant (5 weeks 3 days). It happened on Halloween and the baby’s due date was our anniversary so it was just like a triple whammy. I did tell people after the midwife confirmed it two days later, and got comments from the helpful to the horrid. I am hoping to do some writing about it. There is a national day of remembrance in October. Blessedly we got pregnant very quickly afterwards and are due in September! This time we did tell a lot of people around 6 weeks and asked for prayers. Blessings to you and your baby!

Katie, my story is similar. I had a beautiful perfect daughter w/no complications 4 years ago. In the past 4 years I’ve suffered 2 miscarriages & finally got pregnant again this past October. We’re due July & sooo excited! We found out when I was only 3 weeks & PUBLICLY told people right away. I’m convinced the outpouring of prayers is what has gotten us thru this pregnancy successfully! It’s an amazing life/body changing journey that is worth every minute and penny! I have 2 amazing daughters, 9 and 2. I was reading some of the other posts and its amazing how many women have gone through similar (I wish I would’ve known some of you almost 3 years ago).
Don’t fret over your dogs, just let them be around and snoop when the nursery gets prepped and to sniff something of your little bundle of joy when he/she comes home so they can learn the new scent. I’m sure others will have other tips and tricks…that’s just what worked for our pups.
BTW – have you tried TJ’s ginger snap cookies? They helped out a lot with morning sickness.

PS. I think I can identify with the ‘failed dog trainer’ – ha, ha. However, my old Labrador was the most perfect “uncle” to my little nephew: he would always check on him, lie right beside him when he slept, and alert us whenever the baby cried (and would you believe, he was completely deaf!). He seemed to have endless patience, and we never, ever needed to worry about him being around the baby. I hope your dogs will welcome your newest family member in much the same way. :) Another advantage with having dogs is that research shows that they actually help prevent allergies in children.

I was wondering why there were no updates for your marathon training runs. :-) I assume you aren’t going to run the Pig this year, but please tell me you are still doing some running!! It’s perfectly fine to keep running while pregnant as long as you aren’t feeling any weird pain or cramps. I ran during both of my pregnancies until about month 5 when the pressure/location of the baby while running made me have to pee urgently…lol! It’s not always easy to find a place for an emergency potty break while out running! I took up swimming after that, and it felt wonderful to be in a pool with my huge belly and swollen feet.

Wow that is WONDERFUL news Emily! We are due around the same time! My due date is October 9th and I am 10 weeks along! Isn’t it so exciting? Have you been feeling nauseous and extremley tiered?
