about me
Adventures in Juicing.

It has arrived…

IMG_2661 (640x422)

You may recall a few weekends ago when I mentioned that Casey and I watched the documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead – and then immediately decided we needed a juicer.  I went back and forth, did some research, solicited you guys for advice and opinions, and ended up ordering the Breville Ikon

I had been wavering between the Compact and Elite models, and was thrown off by the huge difference in price.  Ultimately I ended up choosing a model that fell between the two, and I used my American Express points to pay for it, so it felt like it was freeeeeeee!  Happy juicing to me!

After two long juice-less weeks, it arrived on our doorstep yesterday afternoon, and we immediately dug into the fridge to see what we could pulverize…

IMG_2663 (640x427)

Fresh apple carrot juice?  Sounds good to me!

IMG_2664 (640x427)

Casey carefully cleaned and assembled the juicer to get it started…

IMG_2670 (427x640)

While I sat on the counter top and read directions from the manual – another very important job.

IMG_2667 (640x427)

With just one juicing session behind me, so far I am really happy with the model we chose.  It is not nearly as loud as I expected, and doesn’t take up much counter space at all.  Also, since so many of you recommended cleaning it immediately, that is exactly what we did and it rinsed off really easily.  Fruits and veggies going IN!

IMG_2675 (427x640)  IMG_2677 (427x640)

Lots of JUICE!!

IMG_2679 (640x427)

Time to taste our concoction…

IMG_2684 (426x640)

YUM!  I assumed it would be good, but I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect since most store-bought juices (even the “all natural” ones) have some sort of additives and other sweeteners.  I was pleased to discover that it was absolutely deeeelicious, and quite filling!

IMG_2681 (427x640)

So today, I did what anyone with a sparkly new juicer would do.  I went to the grocery store and bought an absurd amount of produce.

IMG_2708 (640x427)

One of my worries about juicing was that it would be expensive, so I made sure to buy the items with the best prices and keep track of it all to see what we can expect our new habit to cost.

IMG_2709 (427x640)

The produce haul:

  • 16 organic apples
  • 8 oranges
  • 1 large piece organic ginger
  • 1 organic head purple kale
  • 2 organic swiss chard
  • 7 organic cucumbers
  • 2 heads celery
  • 5 pounds organic carrots
  • 2 bunches large beets
  • 2 pounds lemons

Total cost:  $34

IMG_2712 (640x427)

I didn’t think that was a bad price for that at all, especially considering over half of it was organic.  It will be interesting to see how much juice we get from all this, and what it breaks down to per glass (nerd alert).

Either way, I’m excited to get all this delicious fresh green stuff into my afternoon snacks!

IMG_2713 (640x427)

We usually start each morning by splitting a blender full of smoothie to go with our breakfasts, so I think juicing is going to become the new after-work snack.  I’m hoping it gives me a much needed pick me up late in the day, and keeps me full until dinnertime.  I still have a lot to learn about juicing, but I’m definitely excited to get started!

Now that I have a refrigerator bursting with fresh produce, I am expecting to go into labor at any moment.  Let’s hope I get to enjoy a few more glasses of juice first!

Fun!! I had a lot of fun attempting a juice feast and would have had even more fun doing it the way you are, as a snack with no pressure! My favorite juice is a head of kale, an orange, a cucumber and a bunch of carrots (4 jumbo size?). So good.

Oh! I have the same juicer! I love it! My favourite combination is apple, carrot, beetroot and ginger (heavy on the ginger, light on the apple!)
Best tip – clean it straight away after use and it’s really easy :)
Happy juicing!

I am a huge lover Of your blog and had to comment- I’ve recently fallen in love with fresh fruit n veg juices myself and in still researching which juicer but Breville is what I’m leaning towards so thank you for this post! And Happy juicing! Make sure Casey knows how to use it so that if you do go into labor now he can make YOU some juices and good luck! Mommyhood is the most rewarding thing in the world as I know you will find out in days!

YAY! I hope you will post weekly recipes! We received our new juice in the mail this week and started off with an easy apple/orange juice. Very good but I want to get a little more experimental! :)

I love freshly juiced juice but my issue is juicer cleanup. I have the Breville Elite in stainless and the pulp gets stuck in the ‘teeth’ of the juicer something awful and it takes me….forever!! to get it fully clean so I dont juice b/c between the actual juicing and the cleanup, it’s a 30+ min ordeal. But your juice pics make me want to juice again.

Lmk what you think of cleanup on the Ikon model.

And gotta love Amex points :)

My husband and I had this exact same experience after we saw the movie. Fortunately we had a hand me down masticating juicer on hand when we saw the movie. One month later, we are still juicing constantly. A Seattle tip: the Aurora Village Costco has a 10 pound bag of organic carrots for like $5. They also have great bulk celery, cucumbers and romaine, these are not organic, but are usually pesticide free and/or green house grown. Also not to turn this into a sales pitch for Costco (but hey it’s local too) they also offer those field roast sausages you like for an awesome deal $10 for a 3 pack (as in 12 “sausages”). Sorry, I was just there last night loading up on my juicing supplies and my monthly supply of field roast. LOL. YAY Juice!

[Reply]

I do love juicing, but I just can’t reconcile the benefits with the amount of pulp that gets wasted…

[Reply]

Dynamics Reply:

There is so much you can do with your pulp. To name a few… muffins, fruit pulp for a topping on desserts and yogurt, pasta sauce, soup for flavoring and/or thickening, add to smoothies and the list goes on an on. Those with dehydrators make cookies, crackers, sprinkles for the top of salads. Add carrot pulp to your dogs food as a special treat. I have even heard of people using the pulp to exfoliate their bodies. Have fun!!

[Reply]

Stephanie Reply:

Dynamics – I agree with you. I love adding the carrots and apples to my dogs food. The pulp does not have to go to waste!

Michelle (The Runner's Plate)     at 4:50 pm

My husband has always wanted a juicer, but I’ve been leery because it seems to expensive to buy all that produce. (Especially when you live in Alaska and you don’t have access to cheap farmer markets or local orchards.) Plus I never liked the idea of throwing away the fibrous part of the fruit/vegetable. (Or are you using it some other way?)

I’m very glad this is a concern of yours, and I will be very interested to see how the price figures out per serving!

[Reply]

Rachel @ My Naturally Frugal Family Reply:

I have seen that some people maker crackers out of the pulp. which is a good way for that stuff to not go to waste.

I have a juicer, but honestly, I get really lazy and don’t use it all that often. You’ll find that certain fruits and veggies (celery, cucumbers, apples) produce a lot of juice and others (kale, spinach, lettuce) produce hardly any. My favorite combo is apple, cucumber, carrot, lemon, parsley and kale.

Even if you do go into labor soon, good! It will be nice to have such a healthy treat/snack available while you’re in between diaper changes ;)

[Reply]

Jennifer (The Gourmetour)     at 6:02 pm

I totally agree that was not expensive at all!!! It’s amazing that people complain that they can’t eat healthy on a tight budget!

Anyways, I am so jealous of you! You beat me to the juicer! After I saw that documentary during the summer I became desperate for one.. still no sign of one in my future but hopefully one day!

[Reply]

Amy     at 6:14 pm

Hooray, hooray! I use my juicer every single day, sometimes more than once. I learned a great tip from a local vegan restaurant here in Portland: not only can you juice kale leaves, but the stems too! The best combo for this is apple, kale stems, lemon, and ginger. So, if you cook with kale for dinner, save the stems and try juicing them. I usually use maybe four stems of kale, two apples, half a lemon, and a good-sized knob of ginger to make enough for two people. Enjoy your new juicer!

[Reply]

Laura (On the Threshold of Greatness)     at 6:19 pm

Enjoy! I have a Breville too (different model) and have been so happy with it!

I’ll occasionally freeze juice if I have produce that’s about to go bad. It works great if you have extra glass jars laying around. :)

[Reply]

Chase     at 6:20 pm

It is decided. A juicer is totally going on my wedding registry.

[Reply]

Ann     at 6:20 pm

Get all the juice you can now because if you choose to breastfeeding you may soon realize your baby can’t handle citrus and leafy greens. I had to cut OJ completely out of my diet as well as spinach and kale. Maybe it won’t be a problem for you but just FYI. Maybe it will just make you more creative with different foods and combinations.

I like the idea of juicing, but the cost of all the extra fruits & veggies is the reason we haven’t made the leap yet. Keep us posted with how that works out – I really like the concept and all the extra nutrients you are drinking.

[Reply]

Katie @ SerenityintheStorm     at 7:27 pm

One tip I found when juicing with the Breville we have is that juicing whole ginger is kind of a waste (it doesn’t really get as much juice as we’d like). We’ve been buying bottled ginger juice (by the Ginger People), which they have at PCC. Once we started adding this to the finished pitcher of juice, we actually could taste the ginger and it was great! Not sure if you’ll run into the same ginger juicing problem, but a heads up, if you do! Happy juicing!

Mahealani @ Beauty, Brains, and Balance     at 12:20 am

Yay for juicing! This doc made me bust out my old juicer too, my fav is also apple/beet/ginger. I make a fresh batch right after work and an extra one for the morning at the same time. That way I get 2 juices out of 1 session and as long as you refrigerate and consume the juice within 24hours, you’re still getting most of the nutrients without too much degradation. I’ve also seen another blogger juice a whole watermelon, chill the juice, and then pour it directly into an electric ice cream maker for natural sorbet!

[Reply]

Liz     at 5:02 am

I’ve been on the fence about getting one too…I make smoothies everyday, but I’m sure I would love the juice too! I bet it will come in handy when Baby Garnish is older to give him healthy juice without sweetener and fill his belly with lots of veggies.

[Reply]

I LOVE juicing. You guys crack me up with your reading of the directions, etc. Wait until Baby C arrives…you’ll be lucky if you remove the instructions from the box before you throw it out. haha! Seriously, you don’t realize what you USED to have time for after you have kids. Fun times ahead!
My favorite concotion is: an apple, a few baby carrots, stalk of celery, 1/2 cucumber, handful or spinach or kale, ginger, and a squeeze of lemon. So good!

Good luck with your delivery!

I juice every day so I’m very excited to read your adventures in juicing! After much trial and experimentation, I’ve found my favorite times of day for drinking juice are mid-morning and late-afternoon. I’ve tried it for breakfast, but I get so hungry so quickly, so I do green smoothies instead (and still have a mid-morning juice and raw nuts snack).

My favorite daily green monster:
Cucumber, celery, lemon, kale, chard, apple, pear

My favorite tasty sweet summer treat:
Apple, lemon (and sometimes cucumber too)

Other favorite blends:
Watermelon, kale, lemon – this ROCKS
Any combination of pineapple, lemon and greens – so tasty, kind of a lot of work with the pineapple
Carrot, kale – also a good raw base for smoothies.

I HIGHLY recommend Kris Carr’s “Crazy Sexy Diet” for more on juicing benefits. Have fun!

This is a really helpful and interesing post. My oldest daughter (She’s 8 and I have 2 others ages 5 and 1) is always asking if we could make our own juice. She’s really interested in doing it, but I always thought it would be too expensive to get into, and really time consuming. I’m really interested to see how much juice all those veggies make, and if you think these are kid friendly (meaning they taste good.) Also, how long does the juice last in the fridge after it’s made? We don’t drink sugary drinks to begin with, and we stick with organic juices with no added sugar so the girls aren’t really into sweet juices anyway. I am looking forward to more posts about your juicing experience.

For green juice: try kale, cucumber, celery, green apple, lemon, and ginger. For something fruity, try 2 grapefruits, 2 oranges, and one peach – divine! Jointhereboot.com has lots of good juice recipes.

Hi Emily. There is a produce stand here in Seattle (65th and 15th in the Revenna area just north of the U-district) called Raising Sun Produce that has freakishly cheap produce. It isn’t organic and is on it’s way to going bad but might be perfect for juicing. I’m not sure how important organic is to you but I’ve asked them why they have such cheap produce (I wanted to make sure it wasn’t some unethical operation!) and I guess they have long standing relationships with several farmers. Sounds good to me!

I, too, would be very interested in your cost-per-ounce breakdown!

You’ve inspired me to pull out my old simple Breville juicer for my 35-week pregnant self and my two year old. It’s been delicious! I’d love to hear more about your juicing experiences: washing tips or shortcuts; recipes; how often? And of course the cost-per-once breakdown would be awesome. Not sure if you’ll have time for this post, but in case you do….

Also, I’m a new reader/fan of your blog and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of your baby! I am only a few weeks behind you so I feel like we’re in this together, and once you go, it’ll be my turn :)
