about me
February Sunshine.

When we booked our trip to Hawaii months ago, everyone here in Seattle told us that we would need a winter vacation to survive the dark and dreary weather here.  From what I hear this particular year has been mild, and I am definitely not complaining.  February is typically nothing but clouds and rain, but this weekend has been nothing but glorious sunshine.

We spent as much of it outside as possible.  Starting at the market…

IMG_8587 (640x427)

Where it seemed like everyone else in Seattle was out playing as well.

IMG_8589 (640x427)

IMG_8592 (640x428)

Making our weekend extra special has been sharing it with visitors all the way from Indianapolis!  Casey’s parents are here with us for the week to visit Cullen (let’s not even pretend like people still visit US anymore!).  Three generations of Malone men.

IMG_8596 (427x640)

A delicious and gooey giant brownie.

IMG_8598 (640x427)

Followed by my favorite Field Roast Apple Sage dog.  Sauerkraut, dill relish, deli mustard, and ketchup – perfection.

IMG_8607 (640x427)

We wandered the market for a while, and then took my in-laws to one of our favorite Seattle spots – Golden Gardens Park.

IMG_8610 (640x420)

On a sunny day when the mountains are out, there is truly nothing more beautiful than this.

IMG_8647 (640x427)

It’s so fun having Tina and Eddie here with us.  They love Cullen so much, and it makes me smile to see him with them.

IMG_8612 (640x427)

Family photo-shoot.

IMG_8621 (425x640)

With my two favorite boys.

IMG_8626 (427x640)

Everyone told me that once you become a parent, you start seeing the fun of simple things all over again in new ways, and it is so true already.  I love watching Cullen see the world and take it all in.

IMG_8635 (640x427)

Discovering the beauty of the mountains and the water.

IMG_8637 (640x427)

I hope he grows to love them as much as his mom does.

IMG_8640 (640x427)

IMG_8643 (640x420)

We made it back to the house just in time for kickoff.  I made a giant plate of cut veggies for dipping.

IMG_8650 (640x427)

And we demolished a double batch of the cheesy vegan bean dip.  Delicious and so easy!

IMG_8651 (640x421)

And even though I didn’t watch a game all season, I still sat, cheered, yelled, and tweeted through the whole thing.  What a great game!

IMG_8654 (640x427)

But I was MOST excited about what came after the game.  My little sister goes to Butler University in Indianapolis, and she was selected to be one of a small group of students who filmed a few segments with Jimmy Fallon for his Super Bowl special!

So crazy cool!!

Capture

I’m so proud of her for all the great things she is doing in school.  And I’m crossing my fingers she’ll come spend another summer with us this year.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

What a gorgeous day! Sooo, jealous you enjoyed that beautiful weather. It was sunny and warm here too this weekened but I was cooped up in the house sick. :( Cullen seemed like he enjoyed a nice day out too! Btw, your in laws have the same names as my parents — so weird!

Emily,

Where did you find Cullen’s adorable little sweater? I’m obsessed with elbow patches and they’re even cuter on little baby arms!

[Reply]

Michaela Reply:

they have the cutest clothes for Cullen, don´t they?! I have always thought it wasn´t nearly as much as fun to dress up a boy instead of a girl, but now… bring the boys on ;)
And I just bought a sweater with elbow patches!

Thanks guys! That little shirt was a gift, and I LOVE IT! It’s baby H&M – so cute! :) Boy stuff is definitely different than the precious girl things, but still so fun and cute.

I ADORE Golden Gardens park! When I was pregnant with my first I worked on Market street. Every day I would go get a big cup of soup from Great Harvest and go sit down there, so many memories :)

Aren’t we having a gorgeous February? But it’s still good insurance to always book a winter Hawaii trip, just in case. :)

Looks like a great weekend! Cullen is getting so big.

Just a question about your stroller … What kind is it? Does the infant car seat fit in it? Thanks!

[Reply]

Emily Malone Reply:

That is a Snap N Go that we got as a gift! The carseat just sits right inside it – very convenient!

My friend took us to that Farmer’s Market when we were there. Super cool vibe. I remember looking for that vegan sausage you always talk about. Those photos on the water are beautiful. You are blessed! Jimmy Fallon..what a lucky gal

Wow how exciting for your sister. What a fun opportunity! Maybe some of your luck is genetic??

Gorgeous weather. I was in Seattle years ago over the New Year and I loved it there. Much more mild than WI (except this year has been ridiculously awesome).

Enjoy the family time!!

Those mountains are breathtaking! I need to get out to the West Coast. I’ve been to California, but I want to see Oregon and Washington… just looks so beautiful!

Looks like you had an incredible weekend! I love seeing family photos to see how genetics comes down the pipeline. Casey’s face is shaped just like his dad’s. Although he seems to have his mom’s smile. Cullen is so freakin’ adorable! Lose those big healthy cheeks and pouty lips. Too cute. I’m glad you had some great weather Emily. Atlanta felt like spring time for sure. The weather is crazy, but I’m not complaining at all. Have a great week!

Yay Butler and fellow Hoosiers! My cousin went to Butler and my sister drove me around the campus in September (she lives in Carmel). I bought a Butler Bulldogs shirt and wear it all the time.

Seems like a lot of bloggers went to the farmer’s market this weekend :) Maybe there’s a link there.

The family photo is definitely one for the wall! It looks beautiful. I always hear Seattle is rainy but your posts always make me want to book a trip there.

It’s been similar weather in San Francisco, especially this weekend. I feel like when you live in a city like Seattle or SF you absolutely have to take advantage of those wonderful, clear blue sky days. I sure did this weekend! And your field roast dog looks so yummy, jealous!

Take pictures of the generation of men every chance you get. My grandsone is a “4th” and when we get together he gets his picture taken with great grandfather, grandfather, and father. Sometimes there is eye rolling but most of the time he doesn’t mind. I love looking at all the photos from when my grandson was born. They are a treasure.

What kind of nutritional yeast did you use for the dip? I used Bragg’s and it has a weird acidic after taste that didn’t sit well with me. I had to dump in lost of garlic powder to get it right. I love garlic so I’m okay with this!

Sherry     at 4:56 pm

You are a great mom! Thank you so much for your recipes. I served your vegan Lentil Quinoa loaf for the Superbowl and it was a big hit, even with carnivores. It gets better if you serve it on day two or three, so it’s great to make ahead of time. I didn’t have fruit salsa, but regular salsa was great. I also added a dash of liquid smoke to the recipe, which gave it an amazing je ne sais quoi. Maybe it was the dash of vegan worcestershire sauce that I substituted for some of the veggie broth or the chopped green pepper I added, but between the two of us (98% you) I have a favorite new recipe. Next time I’m going to use it as stuffed baked pepper filling.

As a native Seattle-ite, I can tell you that there is almost ALWAYS one or two very beautiful weeks in February. It’s a good time to take a vacation any time of the year, but February? You’ll miss some sun around here!

It is the same here in Calgary with an unusual warm weather. I am not complainging because it means that I can take my little 3,5 months old daughter outside. Otherwise we would be stuck inside for weeks with a winter showing minus 20 or even 30. Enjoy the weather :-)

You didn’t see just any music at the Ballard Farmer’s Market; the photo of the man with the banjo and the girl with the guitar — that’s Squirrel Butter, an old-time sweetheart duo, both of whom are in the larger band, The Tallboys, who are fairly well known in the PNW (and who play for the awesome bi-weekly square dance at the Tractor Tavern!) I often wander around farmer’s markets just hoping to happen upon them busking! You were lucky!

The cheesy vegan bean dip was delicious! I used a can of pinto beans (couldn’t find the tri blend) and then topped it with cheddar Daiya before heating it in the microwave for a minute. It was a huge hit with my vegan boyfriend! Thanks for the recipes!
